How can 20 million book purchasers and thousands of churches become sidetracked and confused? Simple. They misunderstand or lose focus on God’s real purpose for them. They seem to think Christianity is a numbers game and that God’s purpose is to build big churches. And, since so many seem to be doing something that appears to work – it must be right. Wrong! In Romans 8:28-29 God clearly sets forth His purpose for every Christian. It’s not veiled. It’s very clear. His purpose is that we will be conformed into the image of His Son. He further states that he is going to use everything that happens in our lives in a way that will support His purpose for us. His purpose is not to make us feel happy, to make us feel important, to make us feel significant, or to make us feel anything. God is not in the feelings business. He is in the truth business. His purpose for us is that we become like Jesus and how we feel about it isn’t very high on His list of concerns.
The Christian life is not about seeking frothy, emotional experiences. The Christian life not a strategy of giving so we can get. The Christian life is not about being busy and badgering the lost. The Christian life is not about creating big television ministries. The Christian life is not about public healing extravaganzas. The Christian life is about Jesus because it’s His life – not ours. It’s about letting Him live through us, in spirit and in truth.
Christian growth and becoming spiritually mature is about learning to see the world as Jesus sees it. Christian growth is about learning to see people the way Jesus sees them. Christianity is about knowing the truth as Jesus expresses the truth. Christianity is about putting on the mind of Christ. Christian growth is about receiving a complete truth transplant over the course of our earthly lives. The transplant we need is the replacement of our old, dead Body of Truth with the living Body of Truth of Jesus Christ. If you haven’t figured it out by now, the term Body of Truth is almost synonymous with spiritual life itself. When we receive the life of Christ by faith we receive Him. Christ is truth.
