Can We Define Our Own Truth?

By Jim Norman

I will lead the blind by a way they do not know, In paths they do not know I will guide them.

Isaiah 42:16 NASB

You may believe you are quite capable of defining truth in your life.  You may agree that even though your Body of Truth might need a makeover in certain corners, the idea that you are incapable of defining truth is ridiculous.  If I was writing this from a secular perspective we might have something to argue about.   I’m talking about spiritual truth; the things of God and the truth about ourselves as fallen creatures.  It is spiritual truth that we are incapable of defining by human reasoning.

Many Christians have been seduced by the idea that everyone can have their own truth and that truth can be adjusted to accommodate personal preferences and needs.  In many churches, Biblical truth is softened to make Christianity more comfortable, so that membership numbers will thrive.  Being comfortable means you don’t really need to change.  You can pretty much do what you want to do and consider it to be God’s will for you.

People believe they can adjust truth to fit their own preferences because the Bible has no authority for them.  They have been deceived by ideas that the Bible has been changed, or things have been omitted from the Bible, or that the Bible is just a good spiritual book written by men from their own thinking and wisdom.

The Bible clearly demonstrates that man by his own effort and power can’t define spiritual truth.  That kind of truth comes by way of revelation through God’s word.
