Following is a direct quote I ran across at an obscure site on the internet while doing research for this chapter. It was written by a woman named Fran Hafey. I have no idea who Ms. Hafey is, but what she wrote is so typical of rhetoric you hear today I am compelled to share it with you to demonstrate the arrogance that exists beneath the idea that we have the ability to define the truth.
Taken from the article, “ Your Truth is Within You”, by Fran Hafey
“What is your truth? Your truth is your essence of who you truly are. It’s that feeling, that knowing that you are who you are from the center of your being all the way to the outside of your aura and even beyond…For instance, my own truth is that I do not need anyone else to tell me who I am, or what I believe, or how to find my answers or where to look. I know who I am totally, even if it means I find out new answers and information daily. I trust and love myself. I am at peace with who I am and my path I follow, even if I am not so sure what the name of it is. That doesn’t matter. I honestly know I have found the REAL me, the one that was created to do the job I am now doing. I know there is so much more to do and I will let Spirit/God lead me. I can do it the hard way or I can let life flow and deal with it as it comes, knowing that I am sufficient and light enough to find my way.”
It would be difficult to entertain the possibility that Ms. Hafey is a Christian, but it would not surprise me if she thinks she is. Nothing surprises me anymore about how far people will stretch the truth and still claim to live under a Christian umbrella. From Ms. Hafey’s own words it is clear she believes the following to be true:
- Each person can have their own truth and that truth is established by how you feel about it. In other words, truth is acquired experientially.
- She is sufficient within herself for all things – no divine assistance is required. She is her own guide.
- It is more important to understand herself, than to understand God.
- She does not have a clue as to who God is or what He might be doing.
- She senses that she has been launched by her nebulous Spirit/God on some personal mission of significance.
Ms. Hafey’s words perfectly illustrate the truth of the first Holy Lie. Ms Hafey has used her best thinking to define the truth of her life and there is nothing biblically true about anything she has concluded. Her Body of Truth is totally polluted by a self-seeking attitude and she is in bondage to her own wants, needs and desires because of it. I do not question that Ms. Hafey believes every bit of what she wrote and she is sincere in her belief. However, just because something is sincerely believed does not make it true.
At the bottom of what Ms. Hafey believes is just a load of personal opinion, based on her own observations and whatever experience she has gained by living her life to this point. All of her ideas are the result of her own reasoning coupled with the way she wants her life to be. It is clear that Ms. Hafey wants to be in control of her life for the moment, and she is not about to turn it over to anything – much less an omnipotent God who demands that she surrender it.
Ms. Hafey will have great difficulty hearing anything that might make her feel uncomfortable. She certainly does not want to hear that the God she does not know has declared her to be spiritually dead and incapable of doing or knowing anything apart from Him. The sad reality is that we have all heard people who profess to be Christians come very close to parroting many of these same ideas and wrapping them up in what they try to pass off as Christianity. A similar message is preached every week in churches across America that claim to be Christian.
What kind of message are you receiving and believing?
